Topic: Musicdisk Project

Evilpaul has let me know that he has a musicdisk engine he'd be happy to purpose for a UKScene release.

So far, DVS said he'd be possibly able to provide artwork, and Keito and myself are able to provide music also.

From here, I suppose it's just ideas and timescale - should we do a theme?

Personally I think a streaming musicdisk would be cool, and we should aim to fill about 74-80 minutes, CD style.

Any thoughts?

Re: Musicdisk Project

sounds fun!

ive got a couple of tracks that i could submit?

Do we have a preview of the engine?

yay

edit: me and keito have a sort of joint project on the go that might be a good one for this big_smile

Re: Musicdisk Project

Wicked, it'd be good to see more musicians on the go. The engine... not sure, I've pointed Evilpaul to this thread.

It'd probably be a good idea to think about themes though... unless we do just a mashup of things...

Re: Musicdisk Project

Engine would be the same as Pimp My Chips. I'd really love to do this without me having to do any coding at all - apart from the interface skin scripting of course. PMC uses FMOD as the player so we can play a variety of formats. I would suggest sticking to either MP3 or OGG though.

Streaming is do-able but has many issues. Firstly, see my comment about not wanting to do any coding. Secondly, we'd need some sort of infrastructure to support the streaming, even if it's just getting space on untergrund or something. Thirdly, what benefits would streaming really bring to a simple musicdisk?

Having tried a musicdisk like this before (DVS will remember!) I'm aware that this may not come to anything.. though I would really love it to! The thing I don't want to do is to have to organise and collect the music, sort the playlist order and those sorts of things - I just don't have the time. But Mr RC55 has said that he's up for that, so we're all good smile

And here're my thoughts on content....

I'd love to have a theme and I'd love to have exclusive tracks from the artists - no old tracks. I'd also love *not* to see multiple tracks from the same ppl if at all possible... maybe we could open this up to some of the UK chipscene musicians if we need more?

[14:38] <parapete> http://ukdemoscene.org/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=573#p573 lol evilpaul comprehension fail

Paul - rc55 just means rendered audio, mp3 or ogg, sometimes referred to as streaming by scenesters, hipsters and blingstersr. He doesn't mean actually streaming the stuff over a network.

Get with the programme, daddio!

Re: Musicdisk Project

Oh.. ha.. yeah. Damn, I feel like such a parapete now!!!1111!123!!"£

Re: Musicdisk Project

Yep rc55 is keen to get this going it seems, as am i, so i'm happy to help out in this respect also smile

I'd love to have a theme and I'd love to have exclusive tracks from the artists - no old tracks.

No problemo smile

I'd also love *not* to see multiple tracks from the same ppl if at all possible...

Why not ?  Are we expecting that many artists that we can afford to have 1 track from each and still amount a collection of 15 - 20 tracks ?  If yes, then cool, 1 track per artists is grand.  I would have suggested upto 3 tracks per artist if they want to submit more than 1, i'm sure many will only submit 1 or 2 anyway, but again i guess this all depends how many become involved smile

Maybe we could open this up to some of the UK chipscene musicians if we need more?

The more the merrier i guess smile

Re: Musicdisk Project

Three tracks max per artist sounds good. It's not a hard and fast rule.

Thematically, I was thinking about maybe something along the lines of "Box Fresh" / "Forward Looking" - so, encouraging new, upbeat confident sounds.

Release date, maybe 1st January 2010? Perhaps a little later, as that's only two months. What do you guys think?

Re: Musicdisk Project

Err, just seen this after alt party, i feel terribly broken neutral

Personally I would love to see a chip music disk instead, this would enable more people to contribute quicker and we'll actually get it done!  The eternal fear is always that you do your part and other people just dont do theirs, it is afterall the uk scene wink  Time is at a premium for me atm as we are semi-crunching at work atm and im also trying to get my demotool usable.  The graphics I did for the musicdisk before which didnt materialise can be used:

http://www.digitalgraffiti.biz/wp-conte … af-wip.bmp

as you can see it was still WIP, but I can easily work on it, change it and polish it, also provide a custom font.

I was aiming for an interface similar to dizneeland by Abyss, if you dont know this series then check it out on pouet, http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=3414.  It was pretty much the reason why I joined Abyss in the first place in the mid 90s, style style style!

Paul, can you work around this design with the PMC interface?  Is there any way we could have some non-staticness to it, I know you say no coding, but a few animations for buttons and stuff could be nice.

lets make this happen boys and girls, quick and easy none of this waiting around for months for musicians to be bothered to make some tracks.  should be 1 allnight tracking session at most? smile

what does "box fresh" / "Forward Looking" mean? No offence but it sounds a bit wanky.

anyway, my 10p.

Re: Musicdisk Project

My thinking behind not having too may tracks by a single artist was just as an attempt to get more variety really - if we know we can't fill the thing up just a few artists from the start then we'll be more pro-active in trying to find as many artists as possible.

Release date? Dunno. 1st Jan sounds good in principal but Christmas is likely to be hectic for me this year hmm

DVS - Animation is possible, depends how complex we want to get. If it's really complex then, yeah, I can add some code support for that. Any musicdisks I can look at for reference that don't need an emu? smile

Chip music or streaming is fine for me. Or even a mix of both. I'd still suggest we use MP3s/OGGs though. Even in the chip world most music is still distributed in MP3 format.

Re: Musicdisk Project

Paul, sadly you cannot get captures of those prods.  but basically they just had a load of transitional stuff with the menus coming on and simple effects, like 2d x0r effects in the background.. really simple but just styled to the max.  Should be a few minutes to code haha wink  nah seriously though, just some background effects, maybe a few basic things that change when a new track is selected, so that it is a bit more dynamic.

personally I cannot see the point in a music disk without anything extra to add than just playback of tunes, essentially its just a winamp skin then.  It would be nice to have a personal greets section, e.g. the playback widgets scroll off and replaced by full width vertical text scroller with contributers greets and messages to peeps they know maybe?

I think the whole thing about these prods are to have a sense of ukscene community and the text section would give that.

oh btw, one conditional should be that Ne7 makes some _NEW_ tunes for this, not from his many year old archive of unreleased tunes.  haha. big_smile  Oh and ban any trance or boom boom music (sortof half joking there..).

Re: Musicdisk Project

what does "box fresh" / "Forward Looking" mean? No offence but it sounds a bit wanky.

Wanky?!?!? Yeah, perhaps. I suppose I was thinking like, modern typography, glossy interface, maybe similar to the aesthetics of Only One Wish by TBL/FLT, for inspiration.

Oh, the scene, so derivative. I'm always open for suggestions though. You could say that pretty much everything in the scene is wanky, to be honest.

Unreleased music is what is required, but I'd probably not want to start placing limitations on submissions without taking a consensus of all people involved. Also, I'd rather not stick to chips, after PMC and Sound of the Underground, I think it'd be cool to flex our fully fledged productions also. If you look at Rebellion by Rebels, you can see what a good mix of formats and styles can do.

Re: Musicdisk Project

Would love to submit a track or two to this (easier for me if it's streaming, but doesn't mean I couldn't get off my heiny and make some mods!)

End of the year as a deadline should be fine for me, am fairly nippy with the production speed.

Re: Musicdisk Project

DeathBoy: Yeah man, would be great to have you in on this. Maybe Boomtopper too.

Xwize has said he might take part also. BRING THE BOOMS! wink

Re: Musicdisk Project

Oh just came here after reading 4mat's tweet. Might I join the party? I know, not purely UK scener, but London based, and it's all about the multiculturalism isn't it? tongue

I'm happy whether it's about chippy tracks or anything else. Trace says my music always sounds chippy so no matter how hard I try big_smile

Re: Musicdisk Project

I'm cool with that, Sole! smile

Re: Musicdisk Project

I'm interested. Admittedly demoscenish-but-not-chippy music is somewhat outside my usual comfort zone, but whatever the criteria turn out to be, I'm sure I can have a bash.

Re: Musicdisk Project

Yeah, I'd love to get involved, too. Happy to do any type of music from streaming to 4ch mod!

Re: Musicdisk Project

i will throw in a song too smile BECAUSE SCULLAR STILL RULEZ!

Re: Musicdisk Project

I'll throw one into the mix. A firm deadline for track submissions would maybe be good to get some carrot-and-stick motivation going (with the carrot being inclusion in the musicdisk) smile

Re: Musicdisk Project

I'd like to release something!

Re: Musicdisk Project

*pokes rc55 or anyone else who might like to sugest deadlines, themes, etc*

:)
